  2.                                  Introduction
  3.  
  4. Thank you for taking the time to examine this demonstration program; we hope it
  5. will convince you to register and add WordWise to  your software collection.  A
  6. lot of  work and thoughtful design  has  gone into  making it  an entertaining,
  7. flexible, and valuable part of your software collection. Once installed on your
  8. computer, it remains like a faithful friend, bringing you a message  from God's
  9. Word as each day begins.  WordWise is a perpetual  daily calendar, and contains
  10. enough Scriptures to display a new one each  day for an entire year without re-
  11. peating.  Though the Scriptures will begin to repeat after one year, each verse
  12. will be displayed only once per year, and the calendar date will always be cor-
  13. rect. In addition to  giving you daily Scriptures,  WordWise  can remind you of
  14. your daily Bible readings as you read through on a one-year plan.
  15.  
  16. As a further benefit,  WordWise was designed with expandability in mind.  Addi-
  17. tional topics may be purchased and added at any time.  Interested in increasing
  18. your Bible knowledge?  Simply add the Bible Facts package  and you'll  have 366
  19. questions to answer covering Bible personalities and events.  How's your vocab-
  20. ulary? The WordWise vocabulary  package will arm you with 366 outstanding words
  21. to "aggrandize your articulation".  From quotable quotes, to foreign languages,
  22. to historical events, the WordWise library offers you many current and upcoming
  23. additions  from which to choose.

  102.                                 Installation
  103. Automatic:  (Recommended)
  104.  
  105. Installation is  quick and straightforward  when using the INSTALL  program in-
  106. cluded with WordWise. Simply insert your WordWise disk into a floppy drive, log
  107. on to that drive (type A: for example)  and type INSTALL to start the installa-
  108. tion program. At each step you are given options, but there is always a default
  109. available by hitting the [ENTER]  key.  If you  are uncertain about what to do,
  110. then choose the defaults.  Once the INSTALL  program finishes,  installation is
  111. complete. Proceed to the section entitled "Running WordWise the First Time."
  112.  
  113. By Hand:
  114.  
  115. Automatic installation as discussed above is recommended,  but if you wish, you
  116. may install WordWise by hand.  This is  only recommended for those  with a good
  117. working knowledge of how to get around in DOS,  so these directions will not go
  118. into great detail concerning each step.
  119.  
  120. First,  you will need to create  a subdirectory  on your hard drive  and expand
  121. into it all of the compressed files which are in this archive.
  122.  
  123. This may be  accomplished with the  EXPAND  utility which  comes with WordWise.
  124. (For example, EXPAND KJV.WW_ C:\WORDWISE\KJV.WWP)  Since the last  character of
  125. each filename is changed to "_" when it is compressed, you will need to provide
  126. it when expanding the file. EX_ files should expand to EXE, WW_ to WWP, and WD_
  127. to WDR.
  128.  
  129. WordWise may  be run at any  time from the DOS prompt,  but is most  convenient
  130. when run from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  If you are unfamiliar with this file, it
  131. is a batch file that is run automatically each time your  computer is turned on
  132. or  restarted.  Because of  this  unique  property,  it is  convenient  to have
  133. AUTOEXEC.BAT perform many tasks that  need to be done each time the computer is
  134. started.  Some tasks it can perform include installing ram drives,  setting the
  135. program path,  and automatically launching menu programs.  This makes it a con-
  136. venient tool for executing WordWise for you when  you start up your system. All
  137. that you need to do is add a single line to AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  138.  
  139. Let's assume that  you place WordWise  and its associated  package files into a
  140. WordWise  directory on drive C.  Your AUTOEXEC.BAT  should look something  like
  141. this:

  148. If your AUTOEXEC.BAT  automatically launches Windows,  Desqview,  Geos, or some
  149. type of menuing program, it should look something like this:

  157. That's all there is to it.  WordWise should be fully installed and ready to go.
  158. You can reboot by holding down the [Ctrl][Alt][Del] key combination and receive
  159. your first day's Scripture.  If you copied  all of the WordWise  packages  (the
  160. .WWP  files) into the  WordWise directory, you'll probably  have  more  of them
  161. than will fit on the screen.  The section entitled  "Changing Package Settings"
  162. contains information on how to disable  those you do not wish to see every day.
  163.  
  164.  
  165.                        Running WordWise the First Time
  166.  
  167.  
  168. After WordWise is installed,  it's a good idea to  restart your computer.  That
  169. way, you can verify that installation was successful and that WordWise will run
  170. automatically. The next step is to customize it.
  171.  
  172. The first time it is run,  the Daily Scripture window will  appear on the Word-
  173. Wise Desktop in the default location,  but you may then resize it and locate it
  174. anywhere on the  screen you desire.  Each time the WordWise  program is exited,
  175. its size and position is saved so that  it will always appear the next time ex-
  176. actly where you left it. You will notice that all of the Bible versions will be
  177. currently active, so you may wish to disable some of them right away. (Refer to
  178. the "Changing Package Settings" section for information.) Just remember to make
  179. your window a little taller than necessary because the length of each Scripture
  180. will vary from day to day.
  181.  
  182. At this point, you should take the time to find your way around and become fam-
  183. iliar with the program.  You can  change some of the program settings  (See the
  184. section entitled  "Changing Program Settings") or customize the program colors.
  185. (under the  Options menu.)  The remainder of the manual  contains more detailed
  186. information to which you may wish to refer from time to time.

  189.  
  190.                           Using the Quick-Display Mode
  191.     
  192. WordWise,  as installed in the  previous section,  will run in  the full-screen
  193. windowed mode, but there is another  mode available if you  prefer remaining at
  194. the DOS Command Line.  In Quick-display mode,  WordWise places the day's Scrip-
  195. tures at the  top of the screen,  and then returns  you to  the DOS prompt. The
  196. Scriptures  will remain until you  start a program or issue enough  commands to
  197. scroll them off the screen. Or, WordWise can pause until you hit a key and then
  198. return control to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  (see the "Installation by Hand" sec-
  199. tion for details)
  200.  
  201. These options  and more are  available by  using command  line arguments  (also
  202. called switches). These switches are placed after the call to WordWise, and are
  203. preceded by a forward slash. (Example:  WW.EXE /R /S /P) Following is a list of
  204. options you are given when running the program:
  205.  
  206.   /Q  QUICK-DISPLAY MODE. Bypasses the windowed environment and uses text mode.
  207.   /D  DATE MODE.  Forces WordWise  into Date  Mode, even if no system  clock is
  208.         detected.+
  209.   /I  INCREMENTAL MODE. Steps through the Scripture list sequentially.+
  210.   /R  RANDOM MODE. Causes WordWise to select random Scriptures each day.+
  211.   /N  NOLINE DISPLAY. If you have so many  packages installed that there is not
  212.         enough room  on the Quick-display screen  for all of them to fit,  this
  213.         option will eliminate the title lines and give you a little more screen
  214.         space.  (Incidentally, WordWise will run well in  43 or 50 line mode if
  215.         your system supports this feature.)
  216.   /P  PAUSE. With this option, WordWise will pause  after being displayed until
  217.         any key is hit.  This is useful when AUTOEXEC.BAT launches  a menu pro-
  218.         gram afterwards.
  219.   /S  SAVE. With this option enabled,  the day's quotes are saved to a file for
  220.         future reference.  The file will be named WORDWISE.TXT and will contain
  221.         the text of  all packages  displayed that day.  The previous day's file
  222.         will always be overwritten by the current day's verses.
  223.   /C  COLOR. This option forces WordWise to operate in color mode. 
  224.   /M  MONO. This option forces WordWise to suppress the use of color.
  225.   /L  LCD. This option is useful on laptops  with LCD displays, displaying col-
  226.         ors that are easier to read on most LCD CGA screens.
  227.   /H 
  228.   /?  HELP. This option displays  several of the  most commonly  needed options
  229.         for you as a quick reference.
  230.  
  231.       + NOTE:If  no mode is specified,  WordWise checks  for the presence  of a 
  232.              system clock.  If it finds one, then Date Mode is used,  otherwise
  233.              Incremental  Mode is implemented.  For  a complete  description of
  234.              each mode, refer the section "Changing Program Settings."

  239.                            Changing Program Settings
  240.

  242. To bring  up the  Program  Settings  window, ╔═[▌]════ Program Settings ══════╗
  243. choose the  Program option from the Settings ║                                ║

  260. [Cancel] closes the window and disregards any changes you have made so far. The
  261.      program will  return to  the state it was in  when you  opened the Program
  262.      Settings window.
  263.  
  264. [Save] will close the window and write the  changes you wanted to disk so Word-
  265.      Wise will  always start up with the same settings.  These changes will re-
  266.      main intact  until the next time  you save  new  settings.  After choosing
  267.      Save, a  small  message box will appear to confirm  that the settings were
  268.      written to disk.
  269.  
  270. [Help] may be selected at  any time for a quick  reminder of how to change set-
  271.      tings.  A small help window will appear and, once closed, the Program Set-
  272.      tings window will remain open until you choose OK, Cancel, or Save.
  273.  
  274. Quote Method:
  275.  
  276.   WordWise can select  the day's  Scripture by one of  three different methods,
  277.   and gives you the ability to choose the one which best suits your needs.
  278.  
  279.   * Date: In this mode,  WordWise checks your computer's clock for the date and
  280.     displays the correct verse for the day.  Unless your computer does not have
  281.     a clock (which is unlikely) this is probably the best choice for you.
  282.  
  283.   * Incremental: By selecting Incremental Mode,  a new verse  will be displayed
  284.     each time the program is run.  Unlike Date Mode, Incremental Mode will give
  285.     you a different verse each time WordWise is run throughout the day. The ad-
  286.     vantage is that you can see  more verses  in a day's time; the disadvantage
  287.     is that you will more quickly run through the 366 selections and begin see-
  288.     ing repeats  before the  year is up.  This should  be the  mode of  choice,
  289.     though, if you are unable to use Date Mode.
  290.  
  291.   * Random: This mode simply chooses  one of the 366 possible  verses at random
  292.     each time the program is run.  Since no record  is kept of which have  been
  293.     displayed, repeats  will be more frequent.  Thus, it is the least desirable
  294.     mode, but is available should you decide to use it.
  295.  
  296.     + Note: The first time  it is run,  WordWise  checks for the  presence of a
  297.     system clock.  If it finds one,  then Date Mode  is used, otherwise  Incre-
  298.     mental Mode is used.)

  300. Options:
  301.  
  302.   * Save to File: By checking this option, the current day's Scripture is saved
  303.     to a text file as the program begins. The file may then be used with a word
  304.     processor or speech processor.  If your  system has the necessary  software 
  305.     and hardware to read a text file  aloud (SoundBlaster card, Pro Audio Spec-
  306.     trum, Covox, etc.) then you may direct it to read  WORDWISE.TXT. Please re-
  307.     fer to your audio card's manual for instructions on how to do this.
  308.  
  309.   * Justify Text: This option displays verses fully justified, with smooth left
  310.     and right edges.  Full justification  can be more  pleasing to the eye, but
  311.     may  leave large gaps between  the words when  your  window is very narrow.
  312.     Experiment with this option to decide which way you prefer.
  313.  
  314.   * Blank Lines: With this option enabled,  all Scriptures will be separated by
  315.     blank lines. If you need more room on the screen to display additional ver-
  316.     sions, try disabling it.
  317.  
  318.   * 43/50 Lines: If your video card  is capable of producing more than 25 lines
  319.     of text on the screen, then you may select this option to increase the num-
  320.     ber of lines displayed to 43 (for EGA cards) or 50. (for VGA cards) If your
  321.     system does not  support this  option, then no effect  will take place upon
  322.     its selection.
  323.  
  324.                                 The Main Menu
  325.  
  326. File:
  327.  
  328.   * Run: brings up a new day's verse,  but only when  running in Incremental or
  329.     Random Mode. In Date Mode, the same verse will always  be displayed for any
  330.     given day of the year.  (See the section titled "Changing Program Settings"
  331.     for details about the three operation modes.)  If no verse window is on the
  332.     screen, then a new  one will be opened. If you have the Save to File option
  333.     enabled, then the new verse will be written to disk.
  334.  
  335.   * Dos Shell: allows you to temporarily leave  WordWise to issue DOS commands.
  336.  
  337.   * Exit: ends WordWise, closes the desktop, and returns to the DOS prompt. The
  338.     current position of each window on the desktop is saved to disk and will be
  339.     restored the next time WordWise is run.
  340.  
  341. Settings:
  342.  
  343.   * Packages... opens the Package  Settings box so that you may enable and dis-
  344.     able packages, and assign different  fonts to those which are enabled.  See
  345.     the section entitled "Changing Package Settings" for details. 
  346.  
  347.   * Program... opens the Program Settings  box so that  you may make changes to
  348.     program operation. See the section entitled "Changing Program Settings" for
  349.     more details.
  350.  
  351.   * Start Date... aligns the Through the Bible  package with the date you begin
  352.     reading.
  353.  
  354.   * Day Forward: moves ahead to see the next day's verse. +
  355.  
  356.   * Day Backward: moves back to see the previous day's verse. +
  357.  
  358.   * Day Reset: returns to the original verse for the day. +
  359.     (+ Note: Moving forward  and backward is only  possible in Date and In-
  360.         cremental modes.)
  361.  
  362. Options:
  363.  
  364.   * References... will bring up a window which allows you to view reference in-
  365.     formation which comes with some packages.  (A few Bible references  are in-
  366.     cluded with your purchase.) Once the Reference  window appears, just select
  367.     the desired reference from the list box  and click  the [View]  button.  If
  368.     there are currently no reference files in the WordWise directory,  the Ref-
  369.     erences option will not be available.
  370.  
  371.   * Show Answers: reveals  the answers to  packages which contain questions.  A
  372.     good example would  be trivia packages such  as "Bible  Facts".  Each  time
  373.     Show Answers is selected,  it will  toggle the answers between  being shown
  374.     and being hidden;  other packages will be unaffected.  Choosing Day Forward
  375.     or Day Backward will cause the answers to again be hidden. This option will
  376.     not be available if there are no question/answer packages enabled.
  377.  
  378.   * Colors... brings up a dialog box in  which you can adjust  every color used
  379.     in WordWise.
  380.  
  381. Help:
  382.  
  383.   * About Packages... gives title and copyright  information about the WordWise
  384.     packages in the current directory.
  385.  
  386.   * About WordWise... gives information  about the current  version of WordWise
  387.     and the address for correspondence.
  388.

  421. sion) Because WordWise comes with so many  packages, you  will probably want to
  422. choose just a few of your  favorites to see each day.  Instead of  deleting the
  423. other files,  WordWise simply  renames them with an .off extension and then ig-
  424. nores them. This way, they are still available for future use, if you choose to
  425. reenable them.  The first and second list  boxes  show the enabled and disabled
  426. packages, respectively. To enable or disable a package, simply highlight it and
  427. click the  [On/Off]  button,  or you may double-click  the package  name.  This
  428. change  will take effect  once the Package  Settings window is closed, and will
  429. remain in effect until the action is reversed.

  432. Following is a brief  description of the  purpose of the  three buttons  on the
  433. right-hand side of the window:
  434.  
  435.   [OK] will close the dialog box and restore access to the main window.  If you
  436.        have enabled or disabled packages,  then the Daily Scripture window will
  437.        be updated.
  438.  
  439.   [On/Off] will change the state of the currently selected package. If no pack-
  440.        age is highlighted, then you will be reminded to choose one first.  This
  441.        action may also be accomplished by double-clicking the filename.
  442.   [Help] may be  selected at any  time for a  quick reminder  of how to  change
  443.        package settings.  A small help window will appear and, once closed, the
  444.        Package Settings window will remain open until you choose OK.

  447.                             For Quick-Display Mode:
  448.  
  449. If you choose to run WordWise  in the Quick-Display Mode,  you have two methods
  450. available for enabling  and disabling WordWise packages. First,  you may choose
  451. to run WordWise in the windowed mode and use the Package Settings window as de-
  452. scribed above. However,  if you prefer to remain at  the command line level,  a
  453. utility is provided (with registration) for turning packages on and off.
  454.  
  455. TURN.EXE is a small utility designed to  make enabling  and disabling  packages
  456. quick. For example, if you no longer want "QUOTES.WWP" to be displayed each day
  457. you would type  TURN OFF QUOTES,  and the filename would be changed to "QUOTES.
  458. OFF".  WordWise would then ignore it,  but you would still be able to enable it
  459. when you need it again. Naturally, the reverse would be TURN ON QUOTES. You may
  460. also use wildcards to produce commands like TURN ON *.* or TURN OFF ???.
